Ethics and Religious Education

Curriculum Intent Statement:

Religion surrounds our daily lives and studying types of religion can help you understand many types of differences that are visible all around you. Studying religion increases your understanding of global complexity. To study religion is to delve into how religion interacts with all of these facets of our world.
The main objective of RPE at Thorpe St Andrew School is to provide enriching lessons that effectively prepare our students for life in a culturally diverse modern world. We aim to promote an awareness of the usefulness of RPE to everyday living, to encourage enthusiasm for interest in the study of other people’s beliefs and to promote mutual respect, tolerance, curiosity and understanding across different cultures and communities.

In addition to this, religion and the sacred texts of religion underpin our legal framework, cultural identities, great works of literature and art and provide and foundational knowledge that is fundamental in the study of the humanities and the arts.

Britain is a diverse society; finding out about the beliefs and lifestyles of all people makes us think about what we believe and reflect on our own choices. This helps us to develop our own ideas and opinions, think critically and ultimately shapes who we are. Learning to express our own beliefs and to listen to the views of others is an important life skill. The business of RPE is an exploration of the influence of religions and beliefs on individual behaviour and national life.
